Eating Disorders In Men

Eating disorder treatment is not only available to women who suffer from the common eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia. In fact, treatment options are available to men who suffer from eating disorders as well. Most people tend to associate different types of eating disorders with women alone, but this is not the case. Although men with eating disorders are only about 10% of the millions of people who have an eating disorder, they can be greatly affected just as women can.

The common types of eating disorders are existent in men, however they usually fall victim to another disorder called binge eating or compulsive eating. Many people believe that men have a faster metabolism and that it is normal for men to eat large quantities of food. While this can be true, some men can have a habit of over eating even when they’re not hungry and overloading their bodies. Men who have this condition do not tend to eat the healthiest, and their bodies can be damaged to a serious extent. Obesity and heart complications are just some of the deadly affects over eating can have on your body. Genetics determine the type of metabolism a person has, so just because a male can eat large quantities without gaining too much weight, the result of eating unhealthy can ruin anyone’s body.

Binge eating is not the only condition that can require treatment. Although it’s not common, anorexia and bulimia do affect men also. Studies show that these conditions are more apparent in homosexual males. The pressures of our culture push all types of people into excessive worry about their appearance. While there are many resources for women who have disorders such as an eating disorder clinic or support groups, men can feel left out.
