Eating disorders are caused by an obsessive need to look thin by any means. The infatuation with reaching a certain weight or appearance often results in a distorted body image. People who suffer from anorexia or bulimia constantly feel overweight when in reality they are dangerously underweight. This disorder is sometimes develops by causes unrelated to weight or food. Different types of eating disorders are often practiced as a method of control. People who have an eating disorder usually have control issues, and have an obsession with gaining control of their body or their environment. By controlling the amount of food and a certain body image a person with these issues may even feel better about themselves. Traumatic events such as family problems or abuse can also affect a person with low levels of self-esteem and cause a need to look a certain way. The pressures of today’s society will also contribute to a person’s need to look thin. These control mechanisms can take over someone’s life and lead to serious health problems in addition to different eating disorders.

Eating disorders are very dangerous and can affect not only the victim but also the family and friends of the victim.
